Apple May Nix Game Centre in iOS8

According to 9 to 5 Mac, an Apple rumours website with a high degree of credibility, Apple is planning on losing Game Centre in iOS8, due sometime in the later half of the year. The site says that instead of having a standalone Game Center app, the scoring and ranking functionality will instead be found solely inside games that have integrated the social gaming feature.

It’s possible that this is part of Apple’s continuing quest to expunge iOS of any sign that Scott Forstall once worked with them. In my opinion, this sounds like another attempt by Apple to fix problems they experienced in 2013 with people hacking Game Centre leaderboards. If this rumor turns out to be true, it will be interesting to see how this affects games that use the service as a means to set up asynchronous multiplayer games (such as Le Havre or Qwirkle) is unclear.

It’s an interesting story, but bear in mind it is just a rumor at this stage. We’ll be keeping an eye on the issue here at Intelligent Gamer.
